They learn to work together Carrot reminds Vimes why he became a policeman in the first place, and Vimes grounds Carrot to adjust to the city’s morally grey area. Vimes decides to take charge before Carrot gets in trouble arresting the Thieves Guild, and when a dragon attempts to usurp Patrician Vetinari, the leader of the city. He planned for Carrot Ironfoundersson, a human foundling raised by dwarves, to enter the city, rescue the citizens from the dragon, and take over the story. Happily, there’s a simple solution: let’s vote. I raised the issue a few weeks ago, but was given so many suggestions that I was more confused than enlightened.
But the question still remains of which one to choose. No hardship there reading more than one Discworld novel is a pleasure rather than a burden. To properly understand Pratchett’s achievement, we’ll also have to look at another book. As a result, The Colour of Magic is fun, but it is not – to put it bluntly – as good. It’s also largely about fantasy cliches, while many of the later books are about, well, everything. It’s rougher and more jagged than plenty of his subsequent books. As plenty of people have already pointed out when I first mooted this idea, The Colour of Magic isn’t entirely representative of Pratchett’s writing.
